“HOW MAY I HELP YOU?” Matthias inquired as the wagon stopped in front of the mining office.

“Can you direct me to Mister Matthias Luckner?” Alfred returned.

“You’ve found him,” He smiled, “now. How may I help you?”

“I am Doctor Alfred Hannibal,” Alfred began, “recently from St. Louis. I seek employment as a doctor.”

“Medical doctor, correct?” He pried.

“Yes,” Alfred nodded, “are you in need of a medical doctor?”

“Always,” he averred, “as it is too far to Santa Fe or Albuquerque to go for a doctor. And there are always small things a doctor is needed for. Mining injuries. Broken arms or legs. Minor illnesses.”

“Then,” Alfred grinned, “I am your man.”

“Where do you wish to establish your office and your residence?” He asked. “In town? Or in the settlement?”

“I believe that I should be on the end of mainstreet,” Alfred stated, “not on mainstreet proper, but at the end. Either near the brothel or just beyond the mining office in the residential district.”

“Of course,” he agreed, “of course. You need to be where you can treat the residents. I understand.”

“What will it cost for the plot?” Alfred requested.

“The plot doesn’t cost a thing,” he responded, “as your services will easily earn it over time. Talk to Alder John and he will start construction as soon as you wish.”

“Where do I find him?” Alfred pressed.

“Alder runs the lumberyard,” he replied, “down near the Mine. pick out your plot, set your wagon there, then talk to Alder.”

“Many thanks, Mister Luckner,” Alfred nodded.

“Not a problem,” he smiled, “all in a day’s work.”
